The Energy Your Body Holds

Understanding trauma as energy

Issue 32 - Read Time: 1 Minutes 54 Seconds

Your body holds onto all of the unexpressed emotions and unprocessed experiences you’ve had.

Your body is like a silent archive of stored energy, shaping how you feel, behave, and even perceive the world around you.

Thankfully, we’re living in a time where books like The Body Keeps the Score have opened people’s eyes to this reality.

Somatic and body-based therapies are finally being recognized for their profound impact, and training programs are emphasizing these modalities.

But even with all of this progress, I STILL think people misunderstand how this energy gets stored in the body and how it shows up in their lives.

Why Energy, Not Trauma?

I intentionally use the word "energy" instead of "trauma" because trauma is judgment-based and subjective.

The same event can affect two people in entirely different ways. One person might experience a horrific car accident and continue driving without a second thought. Another might never drive again.

This difference reflects how each person’s system relates to and encodes the experience. Trauma is in the eye of the beholder.

Here’s the truth: a lot of men, in particular, resist saying, "I have trauma." It’s a word that can feel heavy, disempowering, or even stigmatizing.

And while trauma does exist—I’m a trauma therapist, after all—the way we’ve started to overuse the term can unintentionally reinforce victimhood.

When we reframe trauma as stored emotional energy, it can feel more accessible, less intimidating, and more empowering to engage with.

How Stored Energy Manifests

Let’s be clear: energy stored in the body is a form of implicit memory—unconscious memory rooted in unprocessed experiences.

These memories often carry intense emotions like rage, terror, or panic.

Because these are emotions we’re taught to repress, they don’t just disappear. They get lodged in our bodies.

Here’s how that might show up:

  • Unexpressed panic → Panic attacks.

  • Suppressed rage → Anger issues or lashing out.

  • Buried terror → Persistent anxiety.

We all carry some degree of this stored energy. Some people are just better at dissociating, distracting, or disconnecting from it.

But here’s the thing: disembodiment—living disconnected from your body—is the fundamental challenge of our age.

We live in a world designed to facilitate disconnection. Social media, video games, alcohol, drugs, porn, overworking, binge-eating—all of these are ways to escape the body.

What’s Next?

If you’ve recognized yourself in any of this, don’t worry—you’re not alone. In the next newsletter, we’ll dive into how to begin the journey back to your body, the power of embodiment, and the tools available to support you on this path.

For now, start small: notice when you’re tempted to distract or dissociate. Simply becoming aware is the first step to reconnecting with yourself.
