Discipline Detached From the Body is Devoid of Meaning
exploring embodied discipline
Issue 34 - Read Time: 2 minutes 24 seconds
Discipline without spirit, without embodiment, risks becoming calcified and rigid.
When discipline becomes repetitive and lifeless, it no longer serves you.
Instead, it becomes an instrument of disconnection and distraction—a disembodied ghost going through the motions, unaware of what is happening in your body.
True discipline should foster greater self-acceptance, love, and connection. Without these, it’s lifeless, devoid of purpose.
When creating routines, you must ask yourself: What part of myself does this give me more access to?
This question ensures that your routines deepen your connection to yourself, allowing for more contact and love with the parts of you that need it most.
Without this intentionality, discipline can quickly turn into a block to self-love.
It becomes an instrument of dissociation—a rote experience you perform just to check a box. That’s a red flag.
Take, for example, the popular wellness routines circulating in today’s zeitgeist: daily journaling, breathwork, workouts, sauna, cold plunges, and nighttime reading.
These routines promise transformation and productivity, but many people take them on without connecting to a deeper purpose.
If you’re doing these things without being present in your body, you’re wasting your time. The actions alone aren’t enough.
Yes, some will argue that these practices are designed to connect you to your body, and on paper, that’s true.
But for many, the conscious intention to connect is missing.
They simply perform the actions—going through the motions. This is why so many men follow these routines yet fail to find lasting improvement.
Sure, they might feel a temporary chemical high from contrast therapy, but those benefits are fleeting.
Without embodiment, these routines don’t create real, lasting change.
Embodiment means being fully present with your body, sensations, and emotions as you move through a routine.
It’s about feeling alive and engaged rather than detached or robotic.
On the flip side, dissociated discipline happens when your mind and body are on autopilot—when you’re going through the motions but disconnected from yourself.
Dissociation often stems from cultural pressures to be productive, to achieve, or simply to feel like you’re "doing something."
But instead of fostering connection, it reinforces patterns of detachment.
Here’s an example of dissociated discipline: imagine you’re reading a book you dislike.
Each chapter feels like a total slog, but you force yourself to keep reading because, god damn it, you’re disciplined, and you have to finish what you start.
But your mind is never truly there—you’re somewhere else entirely, going through the motions and taking in none of the benefits. This is disconnection.
Worse, it trains you to disconnect just to get through a task.
And that’s not who you want to be.
You don’t want to be a disconnected peon, trudging through lifeless routines.
You want to be a connected, powerful, conscious creator.
True discipline is about building routines that make you feel more alive, more present, and more connected to yourself.
Sometimes discipline does start as a checklist, and that’s okay.
The key is to approach it with conscious intention so that even repetitive routines can become pathways to presence.
Before starting any routine, ask yourself: Is this helping me feel more embodied?
Is this deepening my connection to myself? If it isn’t, it’s time to reassess.
True discipline isn’t about perfection or productivity. It’s a sacred practice—a way to honor yourself and your body.
It’s about creating a life where every action brings you closer to who you truly are.
